I first heard of Structural Insulated Panels (SIPs) before we started thinking about improving this project.
Unfortunately, how I came across it was watching the following YouTube video. The ultimate flat-pack prefabrication, not available in Australia!
Australia really frustrates me, we think we’re shit hot, however in reality, we’re very conservative and lag well behind the rest of the world in building standards and technology.
The concept of a SIPs home really appealed to me due to a couple of factors:
- High insulation values
- Speed of build
The speed of build in our circumstance is vital, as we currently live in the house the which will need to be demolished. So a SIPs build will reduce the time we will need to live at my parents place in nearby Halls Gap, a short 25 minute drive away.
In Australia, SIPs generally come in 1200mm width and a range of lengths.
The size of panels would therefore dictate the design and form of the building.
We now had an odd shaped block, and a restrictive building material.
